Mission
To provide high-quality, market-driven engineering products and services through research, innovative design, and advanced production technologies that drive industrial transformation and sustainability.
Mandate
To deliver sustainable and innovative engineering solutions that drive Uganda’s industrial transformation through the design and manufacture of machine tools and industrial components.
Who we are
In the national quest to accelerate Uganda’s engineering and industrial capabilities, the Engineering Development and Innovation Centre (EDiC) was conceived as a flagship intervention emerging from the National Science, Technology, Engineering and Innovation Skills Enhancement Project (NSTEI-SEP), initiated in 2019. Anchored by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Secretariat in the Office of the President, EDiC is evolving into Uganda’s first strategic centre for driving industrial self-reliance. This strategic undertaking strengthens the technopreneurship ecosystem by providing an enabling environment for innovation, design, and high-precision manufacturing. At its core, EDiC transforms ideas into market-ready solutions through advanced design research, precision engineering, rapid prototyping, and scalable manufacturing, serving as the beating heart of Uganda’s industrial transformation. EDiC is a space where innovation meets production, and where homegrown ingenuity powers sectors ranging from agriculture to health care, to infrastructure, and even tourism. Over the past year, 690 direct jobs have been created, including 73 engineering jobs at the Deep Tech Centre of Excellence in Namanve, Mukono District, and 617 service jobs through nascent Uganda companies participating in large-scale infrastructure project in the country. This has demonstrated the tangible economic impact of this ecosystem.
Why import when we can manufacture quality products locally?
At EDiC, designers, engineers, and innovators come together to transform raw ideas into functional parts, components, and machine assemblies. We equip Uganda’s industries and Innovation Driven Enterprises (IDEs) with tools not just to consume technology, but to create it.
EDiC is not just about machines and machine tools; it is about sovereignty, competitiveness, and pride. It is the bridge from Uganda’s agrarian past to its industrial future, proving that the nation can build, innovate, and compete with the world.
